Focus on families for World Diabetes Day
World Diabetes Day (WDD), Wednesday 14 November, is the world's largest diabetes awareness campaign, reaching a global audience of over 1 billion people in more than 160 countries. The dedicated theme for this year's WDD campaign is "Family and Diabetes".
On Friday 9 November, Team Cycle 4 Diabetes, led by founder Dr Jacques van Staden, will again turn the top end of
York Street blue to raise awareness around diabetes and to give back to the George community. From 08:00 to 14:00, members of the public can have free diabetes screening done by medical professionals.
During last year's drive more than 1 000 people were screened for diabetes, and this year the team aims to reach even more people.
Most of the 425 million diabetics have type 2 diabetes, which is largely preventable through regular physical activity, a healthy and balanced diet, and the promotion of healthy living environments.
Early diagnosis and treatment are key to prevent the complications of diabetes and achieve healthy outcomes. All families are potentially affected by diabetes and so awareness of the signs, symptoms and risk factors for all types of diabetes is vital to help detect it early. The power is in your hands to act responsibly and have yourself screened for diabetes. The Algoa FM hit mobile will again provide live music on the day, so catch Jacques Arndt in action for World Diabetes Day.
