Hawks not potting around

The recent arrest of a young man from George who was allegedly dealing with dagga, has lead the Hawks to a hydroponic dagga lab in Klipheuwel near Cape Town where more than R65 000 worth of dried dagga and plants were found.

According the spokespers­on for the Hawks in the Western Cape, Capt Philani Nkwalase, Zander Willem Theron (21) was arrested for dealing in dagga on 27 November.

He briefly appeared in the George Magistrate's Court the following day where he was granted bail of R1 000. The case was postponed until 15 February.

"After further investigat­ion the George Hawks and Cape Town Narcotics Enforcemen­t Bureau (Saneb) took down the alleged hydroponic dagga lab in Cape Town on Monday 3 December. Two suspects aged 54 and 56 were arrested at their smallholdi­ng in Mikpunt, Klipheuwel, near Cape Town. They were arrested during the take down operation that uncovered 158 dagga plants to the estimated value of R15 800 and 19 jars of harvested dagga heads to the value of

R50 000," said Nkwalase. The duo were expected to appear at the Blue Downs Magistrate's Court on 5 December to face charges of dealing in dagga.

On 23 November another man from George, Phillipus Coenraad Swart (33), was also arrested for dealing, after dagga to the value of R10 000 was found in his possession. He appeared in court on 16 November where the case was postponed to 12 February.

Both the suspects from George allegedly advertised the dagga on social media platforms.
