4 times to licensing department, still no date for test
'At Wits' End', George:
I have visited the licensing department 4 times now and we still don't have a date for my son's license test: First time: Arrived at 15:10 to be told they don't allow people in after 15:00 except if they are collecting licenses. Second time: Filled in the forms, passed the eye test but had to go and get new ID photos as my son was wearing his glasses in the first photos. Third time: Sat in the queue to pay and get a date for him to write his license test only to be told that we need an affidavit to confirm his residential address as he doesn't have any accounts. Fourth time: Arrived back with the affidavit only to be told that that isn't enough by itself. He needs to attach a proof of address! (The affidavit specifies that he is living with me and what the address is.)
I am at my wits' end as to what to give them if an affidavit doesn't cover it. He has no accounts, he is just 18 years old and still at school.
George Municipality responds:
The following are the requirements for application of a learner's license: Code 1 (LL for Motorcycles)
(i) Age 16 years - up to 125cc
(ii) Age 18 years - above 125cc
Code 2 (LL for light motor vehicle)
(i) 17 years of age.
Code 3 (LL for heavy motor vehicle)
(i) 18 years of age
Please note the applicant must have reached the age before attempting a request for appointment.
In order to make the application an applicant must produce the following documents:
1. Original ID document/valid RSA passport (or foreign ID, traffic register)
2. Two recent ID photos, without head gear or glasses
3. Proof of residential address (PO Box will not be accepted in terms of Fica regulations).
If submitting an affidavit to confirm residence, an underaged person or any other person who does not have proof of residential address in his or her name, must get an affidavit from the person/s they reside with and this is to be accompanied by a copy of one of their accounts confirming the residential address. If married, a marriage certificate is needed unless both initials are on the account.
Example: The 18-year-old referred to assumedly lives with his parent/s. His parent/s must provide an affidavit confirming he lives with them, and giving their residential address. They need to submit an account in their name, together with the affidavit which confirms their residential address.
4. Completed LL1 form, following which an eye test is completed and which must be passed in order to proceed.
(If the applicant fails the eye test at the DLTC, they need to go to an optometrist at their own cost to have an eye test that will allow for the application to be concluded.)
5.When the results are captured on the LEU system the applicant can proceed to the cashier to pay for a date for the written test (this date will be confirmed by the applicant with the cashier).
Please note appointments are made on a first come first serve basis. The drivers license division can be contacted on 044 878 2400 for any further queries.
