SPCA Education Centre inaugurated
The Garden Route SPCA's dream of having an Education Centre was fulfilled on Thursday 29 November, when the new centre was officially opened. Lotto funding and bequests helped pay for the new building, which was four years in the planning. Bequests from friends and animal lovers Edith Maynard and Jacqueline Ogilvie played a crucial role.
During the recent fires, the area was packed with temporary cages housing evacuated animals. Now it's home to colourful displays, books and DVDs to help the SPCA serve the community.
Teaching people to care for, and respect, all animals is fundamental, said head of education Gerda Reynders at the opening. "We teach children and adults about responsible pet care, animal welfare and the goals of the SPCA using puppet shows and PowerPoint presentations, workshops and talks for the public and the community carers. We'll be able to accommodate large groups of students and adults," she said.
To arrange a visit to the education centre, please e-mail Gerda at education@ grspca.co.za. To discuss a bequest to the SPCA, please e-mail projectsg@grspca. co.za.
The SPCA especially welcomes donations of books, DVDs, and toys and games with an animal education angle, for the Education Centre. Please drop these at the SPCA in Ossie Urban Road in the George industrial area.
