Sleeping Prince awakened for theatre’s 50TH birthday

-

It's been almost fifty years since the George Society of Arts first performed in the George Arts Theatre, now known as the Oakhurst Insurance George Arts Theatre. Fifty years of giggles and tears, songs and dances, fantastic performances - and perhaps a few epic fails.

The theatre is not just a building, but a living entity filled with many hearts and countless breaths. Every scratch on the stage, every bump on the wall and every splash of paint tells a story of previous productions. Performers, both new and old, will often start conversations with "remember that time when..." The building itself was built in 1905 and was first used as a girls' hostel before it was turned into a cinema and then, finally, converted into our beautiful Arts Theatre.

Sleeping Prince

The first show to ever set foot on the stage was The Sleeping Prince by Terrence Rattigan, which is being resurrected this year by Ilze Tulleken. The show's opening night will double as the theatre's 50th Birthday Gala Event. Tickets are available through Computicket.

To commemorate this glamorous celebration, the theatre's logo has had a bit of a facelift. Should you need more info or want to become a sponsor, please contact us on 044 874 3142 or info@georgeartstheatre. co.za.
