International food event a huge success
Nobody could blame visitors to York High School on Friday night if they thought they were at a function of the United Nations. Milling around among the stalls were people savouring dishes from at least 12 countries. It was the annual Standard Bank / York High International Food Festival.
Visitors were taken on a trip around the world to taste culinary delights from various countries, including the United States, Portugal, Greece, India, Italy and, of course, South Africa, which was represented by our popular potjiekos.
Attractions included the famous dunking station as well as music items provided by talented York learners under the guidance of exYorkie Chad Abnett.
Headmaster Francois Moll said a tremendous lot of hard work goes into organising the event.
The money raised is ploughed back into the school to upgrade and maintain facilities. He told the George Herald that this function has been held for many years - almost since the start of the school. "It has become a community event that also celebrates the different cultures in town."
Moll thanked the parents for putting together the event, and also Standard Bank that was the main sponsor for the first time.
Arianna Soresi of the Italian stall said it was the first time she was involved, as her daughter is in Grade 8 this year. Soresi was born in Italy and came to South Africa with her family when she was 16 years old. She was pleased with the sales at the Italian stall. "The event is a lot of fun and you get to know new people," she said. "We are doing a killing." Head girl Agqama Faku said it was fun. "I am very proud of the learners. The money will be used for good purposes."
Andrew Brown, the head boy, said the event was an amazing experience. "It gives the opportunity to experience different foods from different countries. It is also a social event."
