Kudos for George ‘Catwoman’

- Ilse Schoonraad

The February 2019 George Good Citizen of the month is our city’s very own ‘Catwoman’, Taryn Mills Groenewald of Cat Garden Route and Furever Cats.

Groenewald goes out into all areas to collect our purry, furry friends - feral and tame - and has them sterilised to prevent unwanted litters - a massive problem across the globe.

Mikaila Hendrikz of We Are George, the main sponsor of the awards, praised Groenewald and Cat Garden Route, who rely solely on donations to do this crucial charitable work, setting a shining example to all Georgians.

Groenewald was in Dubai this week and could not be reached for comment, but her co-volunteer at Cat Garden Route, Melissa Smith, told George Herald that Groenewald is the “most fantastic volunteer” she knows. “Taryn and her husband, who owns McDonald’s in George, every month donate R5 000 to sterilise cats.

“She has also started Furever Cats and homes kittens and cats after she first socialises them and ensures they are sterilised and vaccinated.

“Last year she homed about 100 cats in wonderful homes. She gives so much of her time and energy, it is absolutely inspiring.”
