Old Car Show this weekend

What would drive a couple from Canada to transport a 109-year-old car to South Africa and then drive it almost 600km along the scenic route from Cape Town to George; or a man to painstakingly rebuild an old car from a heap of scrap; or even to collect and maintain tens of vehicles whose contemporaries have long been condemned to the junk yard?

The 24th George Old Car Show, taking place on 8 and 9 February at

Eden Technical High School (formerly PW Botha College) in George will give you an insight into the minds of these extraordinary people. Bring the family on a fun day out and stroll among the more than one thousand cars on display. You may meet Eric and Linda Edwards, who will be travelling from Canada to take part in the 2020 Vettoer tour, driving their 1911 Model T Ford. Or Philip Kuschke, who rebuilt a 1926 Ford Model T from nothing more than scrap parts.

Twelve such legendary cars set off from Cape Town on Tuesday 4 February, to be joined by another four along the way to George, where they'll again be the stars of the show. You may run into Waldo Scribante, whose earliest childhood memories are of crossing the Prince Alfred Pass in a 1962 or 1965 Mercedes-Benz Ponton 219 with his parents, towing an old caravan en route to holidaying on the Garden Route. This year's event will feature a special exhibition of bakkies. Two of the 82 must-see entrants at the Bakkie Display will be the Task Force 1957 GMC 100 Half Ton and the Ford Ranchero.

With a unique prototype Polo Vivo, an iconic Golf and a disco queen photoBeetle, the Volkswagen AutoPavilion exhibition promises to be a highlight at this year's George Old Car Show.
