Support the Garden Route choir and orchestra, Carpe Musicam! by becoming an official friend of the group of musicians and singers for just R35 per month. The subscription guarantees every Friend of Carpe Musicam! cardholder free access to all their shows.
Over the past five years Carpe Musicam! has grown from a small group of 16 players, to an orchestra and choir of more than 100 performers. The standard of the Southern Cape-based group has grown to the point where they were ready to have a go at Faure’s Requiem with an American choir who requested to sing with them.
Then came Covid-19, and all rehearsals and performances had to be cancelled. Virtual rehearsals continue, and while they are not always successful, players interact with each other, keeping the spirit of Carpe Musicam! alive and well. In their latest newsletter, the group's manager, Elsabe Barkhuizen, says Carpe Musicam! is not just an orchestra and choir that entertains the public as often as possible; it is a place where just about anyone can make a meaningful contribution to players and singers of varying standards in a safe, educational and fun environment.
"It is also the expression of the ideal that in a group, no one individual needs to be more important than another, and that everyone can be an equal part of something special if they are serious about it.
"The ideal becomes reality at our rehearsals and performances where beginners and average players of all ages share a stage with worldclass musicians.
“As they all do their bit to make music, differences are forgotten and similarities emphasised. All the parts melt together to create something that is much greater than the sum of its parts."
In an attempt to ensure some income during lockdown, Friends of Carpe Musicam! came into effect on Monday 1 June. For a monthly subscription of R35, each Friend receives a personalised Friend card. Presentation of this card at the door of a concert venue will guarantee free entry to as many concerts as the Friend wishes to attend. The subscription is per person and does not include the entire household, but children under 18 attend concerts free of charge.
