Refuse removal dilemma: frustration mounts
GEORGE - Hiccups with the removal of household refuse have given rise to a public outcry stretching from Blanco and the CBD to Bergsig.
Some note that the removal of their black bags have been skipped for weeks, others have issues getting rid of their blue and green bags. "When they don't fetch the bags the vagrants make a complete mess and leave it literally on our doorsteps," said Nita Otto, an irate resident living in a flat behind the George Police Station.
"Apart from the weekly build-up in garbage, we have vagrants squatting from the Total Courtney Garage to the end of the cul de sac in Morris Street. They are using the electricity box and lawn in front of the Annandale and Greeff flats as a toilet, and leave the place in an absolute mess. We do not know where to turn to anymore," she said.
FF Plus Councillor Gert van Niekerk said his party is quite aware of the dilemma the George Municipality is facing, but they have been inundated with calls from the public regarding the glitches in the refuse removal.
Acting Director of Community Services Allen Paulse said the challenges remain the same as previously - unprotected strikes, diminished availability of staff due to Covid-19, limited overtime budget to address backlogs and increased workload associated with three types of bags.
"The tender process for the appointment of a service provider for the collection and replacement of blue and green bags is in its final stages and we hope to make an appointment soon," said Paulse. "In the meantime, the municipality prioritises the collection of black bags, and collects blue and green as time and resources permit.
The municipality apologises for the current frustrations associated with refuse collection and remains committed to waste reduction."
