R45-millioncentre poised for opening
KNYSNA - A brand-new multipurpose centre in White Location stands on the brink of being opened to the public. The centre, which was built to provide residents of White Location with suitable sports facilities, was started in the 2018/2019 financial year.
The facility is designed to ensure the inclusion of open spaces for sport and recreational purposes. It is accessible to the entire community including people with disability. The facility will accommodate sports such as soccer, rugby, boxing, karate, and basketball, among others.
In response to Knysna-Plett Herald’s (KPH) questions, municipal spokesperson Christopher Bezuidenhoudt said the centre will be fully completed soon.
"The R45-million state-ofthe-art multipurpose centre will be opened to the public once the consulting engineers have handed over the practical completion certificate and relevant Covid-19 prevention protocols allow," he said.
The contractor is currently putting the final touches to the site and ironing out the last snags and they expect to receive the certificate by the end of March.
"Various sporting codes and members of the community will enjoy the use of this world-class facility. Community members and future users are encouraged to take pride in ownership of this centre," Bezuidenhoudt said.
He urged the community to take care of and protect the facility. "We ask for your [community's] assistance in using the facilities as they are intended to be used, and to help us in taking care of and protecting this multipurpose community centre," he said. He said the project was funded by National Treasury's Neighbourhood Development Partnership Grant (NDPG) programme, and a large number of local labour and subcontractors was employed.
