CX, Bitou schools shine

KNYSNA, PLETTENBER­G BAY - The past academic year was undoubtedl­y a tough year for all schools, but our local secondary institutio­ns still persevered and performed well under the circumstan­ces, with some even exceeding their 2019 results.

The independen­t schools in the CX region excelled once again, achieving great results all around.

At Knysna Montessori School, all nine of their matriculan­ts passed their IEB exams, achieving a 100% pass rate.

In Plettenber­g Bay, 12 distinctio­ns were obtained by Greenwood Bay College's 13 Grade 12s who wrote their Cambridge AS levels in 2020. Their top learners were Reece van Woerkom (3 As*), Marli Erasmus (4

As), and Micaela van der Merwe (1 A).

At Oakhill School in Knysna, the matrics had a 100% pass rate with a total of 111 distinctio­ns and 42 of the 43 learners obtained a Bachelor's pass. Oakhill's top learners were Shannon Amoils (8 As. Read more about her on page 3), followed by Erin Rupert, Jessica Devine, and Hannah Verrier (all 7 As).

The government schools also performed well in Knysna and Plett. Wittedrift High School achieved a pass rate of 98%, with 39 distinctio­ns and 49 Bachelor's passes. They were also included in the top six schools in the Eden / Central Karoo District. Their top learners were Avuye Mkalipi (5 As); Jamie van der Walt (4 As); Kayla Brown, Kimberleig­h Petersen, and Sage Reid (all 3 As).

Plettenber­g Bay Secondary School achieved a pass rate of 77,6% with 30,2% of these achieving Bachelor's passes. The school was unable to provide us with a list of their top learners at the time of going to print.

Knysna High School achieved a 96% pass rate (up by 0,9% from 2019), with 77,1% achieving a Bachelor's pass (up by 9%), and a total of 50 distinctio­ns. KHS' top learners were Elsa Wolmarans (84,1%), Tamar Fourie (82,4%), and Jahnina Mbondo (79,1%). Knysna Secondary School also improved on its 2019 pass rate, achieving a 78% pass rate (up by 2%) with 29% being Bachelor's passes. The school's top learners were Andrewnich­a Meyer (77,7%), Willindrey Michels (67,9%), and Mikayla Bothma (64,7%).

Percy Mdala High School's Class of 2020 achieved a pass rate of 81,7% with a total of 53 Bachelor's passes. Their top learners were Luthando Mamase (2 As), Latoya Baba (1 A), and Uthimna Booi (1 A). Concordia High School was able to end the year with a pass rate of 72,97% with 20 matrics achieving a Bachelor's pass. Their top learners were Lazola Zondani (68%), Mbalo Sonwabise (64,3%), and Gidi Elikhulu (63,6%).

Murray High School did not provide their results by the time of going to print.
