GEORGE - Last week Eden Cluster Commander, Major-General Oswald

Reddy, handed over certificates to deserving investigators with special skills to deal with sexual offences decisively.

This comes after thorough investigation by a detective, Sergeant Emmerencia Booysin, ensured a heavy prison sentence for a convicted rapist in 2018.

Booysin, a member of the George

Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual offences Unit (FCS), was awarded a Certificate of Commendation by the National Commissioner of Police, General Kehla Sitole, for outstanding service.

She was instrumental in the investigation into the rape of a five-year old girl from Touwsranten on 18 June 2017 after which the rapist was handed down a 22-year prison sentence.

According to Southern Cape police spokesperson, Capt Malcolm Pojie, the victim was forced into bushes where the 19year old man raped her.

"Members of the public heard a noise coming from the bush and went to investigate when they found the two. They immediately informed a family member of the incident. Upon examining the child, her mother discovered that she had been sexually violated. She immediately alerted authorities," said Pojie.

George police officers, Warrant Officer Jacques Starbuck and Sergeant Garshen Williams, promptly responded to the incident and an investigation ensued.

"Their swift response led to the arrest of the suspect who was convicted for this horrendous act during August 2018."

The mentioned arresting officers were rewarded with Certificates of Commendation from the Western Cape Provincial Commissioner.

The Provincial Commissioner also issued a Certificate of Appreciation to CD Mintoor, a member of the public, who provided valuable information about the incident to the police. Reddy thanked the three police officials for their commitment and dedication. "Their efforts are in line with the approach to curb gender-based violence as well as crimes against women and children and to bring the perpetrators thereof to justice," he said.
