Togs and frocks at Frogfoot 7s
A school from Mossel Bay flew the flag of the Garden Route high as the Shield Winners of the Frogfoot 7s schools rugby tournament series. Players of Hillcrest Secondary School had a visible glow on the field last Friday and Saturday, 9 and 10 September, during the fourth series of this national tournament at the sport grounds of Outeniqua High School.
Rugby players from 16 schools have been competing, with some teams travelling from as far as Kimberley, Stellenbosch and Melkbosstrand. This school's rugby 7s tournament is hosted by Frogfoot along with its partners, Vodacom, Vox, Cool Ideas, Afrihost and Joule.
The winners of the fourth series were as follows: Shield Winners - Hillcrest Secondary School (Mossel Bay); Bowl Winners - Melkbosstand; Plate Winners - Diamantveld High School (Kimberley) and Cup Winners - Boland Invitational. Nathan Smith of Outeniqua High School was named player of the tournament.
The Frogfoot 7s consist of ten series, hosted by nine schools. The tournament started on 20 August, with the final and tenth round at the Loftus rugby stadion in Pretoria on 5 November. This coming weekend the Frogfoot 7s will take place in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga, and on 23 and 24 September in Menlo Park, Pretoria.
"The idea for the tournament was born from the wish to give something back to communities, especially in light of current challenges and the drought of festival-type events brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, while also providing another platform for South Africa's immensely talented school players to shine," said Miranda du Preez, head of brand activation at Frogfoot. "This is an exciting opportunity for u.17 school players to test their skills against schools nationally, with the opportunity to play on one of the best fields in South Africa if they make it to the final."
