Petition against bail after attack

- Kristy Kolberg

An online petition against bail for the seven suspects who were arrested in connection with the assault of Maximilian Reimann (20) has been circulating on social media.

This follows after Reimann was attacked and left for dead by a group of young men in Mission Street in the early hours of Saturday 27 August. He was found by a passer-by on her way to work at about 08:00 that morning. Reimann sustained severe injuries to his face and was nearly hypothermic when he was found.

Since the attack, seven suspects aged between 17 and 21 have been arrested and appeared in the George Magistrate's Court.

Johnwill Tarentaal (20), Shannen-Lee Botha (18), Jody Botha (21), Sheldon Remas (19), Ethan Bevie (21), Chadwill Kiewiet (19) and a 17-year-old suspect appeared for their bail applications on Monday 12 September. The case was postponed for the ruling to be heard today, Thursday 15 September.

Tarentaal is represented by Clayton

Samson of Jansen and Samson Attorneys and Botha by Winston Jansen of the same firm. The minor is represented by Bradley Michaels of Van Rooyen Attorneys. The other suspects have all applied for legal aid. They all remain in custody. The case is before magistrate Theolin November and Eric Mtyhobile is for the state.

Recovering at home

Reimann sustained serious facial injuries for which he underwent surgery at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town on Wednesday 31 August.

He has since been discharged and is recovering at home. A friend of Reimann, Varity Edwards, started the petition in which the Pacaltsdorp community asks that all the suspects who attacked him so brutally stay in custody and that they should not be granted bail. "They left him for dead and what will prevent them from doing it again to another person," she said. The petition can be viewed at https://chng.it/JGNqfPkV.
