They call me Mellow Yellow
Car lovers flocked to Wilderness last Saturday, 14 January, where motor clubs did what they do best - share their passion with the rest. Through its new initiative, Cars@Coffee, the Garden Route Motor Club (GRMC) set up an informal gathering for car lovers on the village green opposite the Wilderness Hotel. Abigail Brooks, secretary of the GRMC, said some 45 vehicles registered for the event. However, quite a number of enthusiasts rocked up spontaneously with their wheels.
The cars ranged from a 1982 DeLorean DMC 12, said to be the only one on SA's roads, a Lamborghini 2018 and a 2015 F Type Jaguar. Ford Mustangs also joined the show, along with Morris Minors, a
Shelby Cobra, Corvette, MGBs and a 1954 Chevrolet. Cars@Coffee was started last year.
Brooks said the aim is to facilitate engagement between club members and friends with classic and collectible cars and the public. "It's informal, free and intended to run as a 'bonnets up' event where owners show their cars."
The events are open to one and all who has a car they'd like to display. "We are particularly keen to attract a younger audience who are often more interested in modern performance vehicles," said Brooks. "We've had good support from the George-based 'ST Crew' who are bringing a collection of Ford Focus ST 225s, and older cars with modern engines. I've also been contacted by the George Air-cooled club who brought several VW beetles and beach buggies."
