Outeniqua Primary joins hands with Môreson

-

The Early Act Club at Outeniqua Primary School recently concluded its latest community service project which took place at Môreson Child and Youth Care Centre. "Having reached out to them before, we were touched by the children at Môreson and they occupy a special place in our hearts," said Danielle Barnard, teacher and Early Act coordinator at Outeniqua.

"We wanted to again do something special with these children. Our Early Acters proved to be more than capable for the task."

Môreson's roots trace back to 1917. Based in Denneoord and duly registered, it provides care for approximately 100 children aged between three and 18. Children are sent to Môreson by court order and come from backgrounds of emotional or physical abuse or neglect. At Môreson they are allocated to one of the eight houses on the premises in accordance with their developmental phases. A multi-disciplinary team focuses on the physical, emotional, social and educational needs of each child.

The learners at the Early Act Club, assisted by their parents, supplied a gift-wrapped pack of pyjamas for each pre-schooler at Môreson.

On 8 September, 19 Early Acters arrived at the children's centre, armed with their gifts, second-hand shoes, lunch boxes and water bottles as well as a hockey stick and racquets for playing. After handing over the gifts and goodies, the Early Act members played outside

with the pre-schoolers.

Outeniqua Primary principal Dr Nico Venter says part of the school's mission as a value-driven school is assisting and empowering learners to, as active citizens, make a positive contribution in society. "Early Act for us provides a forum for answering this responsibility."

Di Kershaw, president of the George Rotary Club, says they are proud to be associated with Outeniqua's Early Acters. "Their initiatives embody the leadership, compassion and community spirit our country needs."

Môreson, being registered as a nonprofit organisation and as child and youth care centre, needs people to become involved by way of volunteering, specifically assisting with school work or sport, sponsoring children or being parents for a holiday or weekend. Financial contributions, birthday gifts for children, clothing, stationery, fruit and vegetables, or items for use in the houses are also highly welcome.

Those interested can phone the Môreson programme coordinator, Adri Quiens, on 078 011 3042.
