Oceanic adventures with Octavia Octopus on stage
The life story of Octavia Octopus will be told during a multi-faceted show at the George Arts Theatre by dancers of Christelle Smit Dance Studio, in collaboration with the Strandloper Project, a non-profit organisation with a vision to conserve marine biodiversity.
Vibrant music, dance, narrative and photography are creatively incorporated to tell The Tale of Octavia Octopus, the impassioned story of her life in the ocean. The work is written and directed by Ronell van Aswegen, and has a compelling message that illuminates current marine environmental challenges, emphasising the detrimental impact of various types of pollution and the contrasting dream of returning to unspoilt natural beauty.
The contemporary choreography by Christelle Smit showcases Octavia's story in a clear and entertaining way. A variety of music genres were selected to merge the emotional aspects of fear, anger, happiness and joy with the visual impact of the stunning costumes and photography.
The backdrop for the dances consists of quality images projected onto a cyclorama screen. These have been especially captured for the show by Chris Leggatt, Helen
Walne and Mark Dixon, members of the Strandloper Project. The narrator is Katherine Armstrong, with Richard Edwards in charge of the music, and Sevi Botha as the sound and lighting technician. Read more about the Strandloper Project at www.strandloperproject.org.
