Kasi Masters claim Heritage Festival
Despite the bad weather of the previous weekend, football legends across the region dusted off their soccer boots to do a replay of their golden days. The Knysna team
Kasi Masters were officially crowned as the champions of the George Heritage Football Festival after defeating Mossel Bay Masters 1-0 in a nail-biting final game on Monday afternoon, 25 September at the Lawaaikamp Stadium. The sole goal was netted by Thami Daweti of Kasi Masters. Twelve legends teams participated in this year's Heritage football competition, namely Callies Masters (Gqeberha), CCK Legends (Cape Town), CB 19 Masters (Gqeberha), Mossel Bay Masters, Rangers (Gqeberha), Ratanang Masters (George), Uitenhage Masters, Umlilo Masters (George), Gqeberha Police, Sinenkani, Vintage Masters (Gqeberha)
and Kasi Masters (Knysna). In the semifinals, Kasi Masters won 2-1 against CB 19 Masters, while the Mossel Bay Masters punished CCK Legends 4-2. Kasi Masters goalkeeper Lonwabo Bobo showed great form throughout the tournament
The final game got off to a good start with the both teams building their passes from the centre of the field. A powerful shot by Mossel Bay and a strike by Kasi Masters were warded off by their opponents' defence.
Thami Daweti of Kasi Masters was playing an excellent game, creating more chances for his side. Despite grinding for a goal throughout the first half, no team managed to put a score on the board.
The second half saw a number of unsuccessful attempts at the goal from both sides. Kasi Masters managed to get the upper hand with quick touches culminating in a long-range goal by Thami Daweti, putting them 1-0 in the lead. Mossel Bay tried to retaliate with a strong attack, but again failed to control the ball inside the box. Kasi Masters came out victorious and went home with a cash prize of R9 000, while Mossel Bay Masters received R6 000.
