No arrests in theft of two municipal bakkies
The two men who were arrested in connection with the theft of two brand-new Isuzu bakkies at the municipal premises in Mitchell Street last Friday night, 5 April, have been released. Police last weekend initially took in three men for questioning, but only two were scheduled to appear in the George Magistrate's Court on Tuesday 9 April. Both were released due to insufficient evidence.
The stolen bakkies have also not been found.
According to information the
George Herald received, the white bakkies with canopies had municipal branding on the side of the doors, but no registration number plates. It is alleged that the perpetrators had a remote control for the motorised gate through which they gained entry to the premises.
George municipal spokesperson Chantel Edwards only confirmed that the incident took place. No response was received on a question whether the premises were guarded by security, more specifically if there was any security on site on the night.
Sgt Chris Spies, the Southern Cape police spokesperson, said the theft was reported to the police on Saturday after the gates to the premises were found open.
"Investigation into this matter continues. The matter was not placed on the court roll on Tuesday due to insufficient evidence to link the men to the case at this stage."
Anyone with information regarding the incident or who could assist police with information to track down the vehicles, is asked to contact the investigating officer, Captain Koti Bosman, on 082 411 3927.
