Themba bridge project nearing completion

National Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga expressed her satisfacti­on with the progress made with the Thembaleth­u bridge project during an inspection visit to the bridge on Thursday 18 April.

She expressed pride in our South African engineers who have the knowledge and skill to plan and construct projects like this.

The bridge is being widened at a cost of R160m to create two lanes in each direction, with additional turning lanes.

There will also be a lane for pedestrian­s and cyclists and it will be wheelchair accessible. Work on the bridge started two years ago and is a collaborat­ion between Sanral and George Municipali­ty.

Briefing the minister on the progress, project manager Petronella­width of the bridge, although more Theron said in two months, road work will still have to be done. users will have access to the full Chikunga said the project is an example of the high calibre of South Africa's engineerin­g and she was impressed and satisfied with the progress.

"The work on the Thembaleth­u bridge is nothing short of engineerin­g excellence," she said.

She expressed pride in our South African engineers who have the knowledge and skill to plan and construct projects like this, which is unimaginab­le to the man on the street.

"I want to appeal to the people of Thembaleth­u to take care of this asset because it is theirs to serve their interests."

She was in the Garden Route on

an inspection tour of several projects along the N2 that are being undertaken by the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral).

She was also briefed on the R700m upgrade of the N2 through Wilderness between Kraaibosch and the Touw River, and the constructi­on of a traffic circle on the N2/Beacon Way intersecti­on in Plettenber­g Bay, a project costing about R100m.

Sanral is also busy with a resealing project of R230m on the N2 between Dekriet and Mossel Bay.

The upgrade of the N2 between Touw River and Die Vleie is currently out on tender. The total value of the projects is about R2bn.
