The Keep George Clean campaign launched earlier this year by Powervan manager Charl Marais got a boost at the weekend when Precast Panel Products (PPP) bought in on the initiative and led a special clean-up effort in George Industria.

With a truck, digger-loader and six workers from PPP, they tackled an empty property in Binne Street that has fallen victim to illegal dumping. Four truckloads of rubbish were carted away.

"We also cleaned up the area on the opposite side of the road. It looked terrible and the team used a bush cutter to clear bushes and picked up rubbish. A few businesses in Binne Street Kirsten and Tulleken, Steel and Pipes and Semper Prima Builders - are supporting the idea and they make an effort to keep their pavements and the road clean," said Marais.

He hopes the initiative catches on so that individuals and businesses do their bit in picking up litter around them.

Keep George Clean has introduced their own logo and will soon have a Facebook page up and running. Boards with the logo will be put up outside every business that supports the initiative.

"They then become a partner of Keep George Clean and we will then try to keep them accountable. It is only a social initiative, but I believe the business sector has to do something from their side. The Powervan has already been doing its bit and will again have a clean-up operation this coming weekend. We believe that piece by piece we can bring George to a point where we don't have litter in our streets," said Marais.

Businesses that wish to become involved, may phone Marais on 083 630 3377.
