Five men assault father and sons in their home for soccer boots and tech

- Kristy Kolberg

A father and his two sons, aged 15 and 18, were attacked and robbed during a home invasion in George Rex Drive in the early hours of Monday morning, 29 April.

According to Southern Cape Police spokesperson Sgt Chris Spies, it is alleged that five men entered the house and accosted the victims.

A source with insight into the incident said an altercation ensued and the victims sustained injuries when they were stabbed with a knife and/or a screwdriver.

"The robbers took various items which include a JBL speaker, two iPhones, two laptops, two smart watches and Puma soccer boots, before they fled the scene," said Spies.

According to the father, who requested to remain anonymous for the safety of his family, the robbers broke into their home through the backdoor at about 01:05.

"They held a knife to my neck and tied me up," he said. During a scuffle the victim sustained a stab wound to his hand.

"The robbers then proceeded to my older son's bedroom where they tried to tie him up. He managed to fight one off, but the other one jumped on him with a blanket and they tied him up. He was also stabbed in his left hip.

“They then went to my other son's bedroom and threatened to stab the dog if we don't stop her from barking. My younger son managed get the knife away from one of them [the robbers], and swung it in their direction, cutting one of the attackers across the shoulder. They took a cricket bat and hit him in his face and he fell to the floor. They then strangled him until he passed out," said the father.

After coming to, the young son crawled from his bedroom to where his father and brother were tied up in the living room. He untied his brother's feet so he could run to the neighbours for help. The suspects fled on foot.

"The police were there within five minutes and they were extremely efficient," said the

victim.

No arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Anyone with information regarding the attack is asked to contact the investigating officer Sgt Nathan Buys on 044 803 4715 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111. All information will be dealt with confidentially.

This follows another home invasion in Heather-lands on Saturday morning, 20 April, on which George Herald reported last week, when a man was also attacked inside his home.

The victim found the suspect in one of the bedrooms with an iPad in his possession. A fight ensued between the victim and the suspect and the victim sustained stab wounds to his head and neck. The suspect, who fled on foot, was apprehended by neighbours shortly after the attack.
