Van Wyk on his way to Provincial Legislature
A new adventure awaits George Mayor Leon van Wyk as he will be sworn in as a member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament in Cape Town on Friday 10 May.
The DA Regional Chairperson of the East Region, Venolea Fortuin, explained: "Following an exhaustive and thorough selection process, Alderman Van Wyk was ranked in an electable position on the Provincial list and the DA Western Cape Provincial Executive Committee approved that he takes up the vacant seat left by former member, Derick America." She thanked Van
Wyk for the work he has done and wished him well on the next chapter in his career.
Meanwhile, back in George, the process to elect a new mayor will start soon and should be concluded by the end of May.
"The post will be advertised and applications will be received over the following weeks. If all goes according to plan, George Council will be in a position by the end of the month to decide on the next mayor," said Van Wyk. Asked about his new adventure he said he is very excited. "While I enjoyed my role here in George enormously, there are naturally other challenges that impact on local government, on municipalities. I will certainly express my views on education, health and various other aspects," said Van Wyk.
He will attend a property development forum in Cape Town on Friday, where he is on the speakers list and serves on the panel.
"I will also have discussions with a major manufacturing company on Friday, certainly pitching, and hoping that they will open manufacturing operations here in George," said Van Wyk.
Deputy Mayor Raybin Figland will act as mayor until a new mayor has been appointed. "Although Figland is currently suspended from all DA party activities, it is still expected of him to perform his duties as deputy mayor," said Fortuin. "The disciplinary process against Figland is still ongoing."
Figland is being accused of sexting. The complaint is related to Figland's alleged relationship with a 19-yearold matriculant in 2021. Allegations include the sending of improper photos to Figland by the 19-year-old.
