57 suspects nabbed for drug related offences
Crime combatting operations to help rid communities of drugs led to the arrest of 57 suspects for drug related offences in the Garden Route District over the past weekend. These operations were aimed against drug outlets and commenced on Friday 3 May. It included focused operations as well as stop-and-search operations in crime stricken areas.
On Friday at about 11:30 George Public Order Policing unit and Heidelberg police members armed with search warrants conducted two operations at suspected drug outlets in Slangrivier.
The members proceeded with searches at both premises and found 140 Mandrax tablets and 7 grams of tik.
Police confiscated the drugs and arrested two suspects aged 23 and 41 on a charge of possession of drugs.
On Saturday 4 May at 15:00, Calitzdorp police members responded to information when they pulled over a vehicle in Voortrekker Street, Calitzdorp. Upon searching the vehicle they found 242 Mandrax tablets and 10 gram of tik.
A 60-year-old occupant was arrested on a charge of dealing in drugs.
In an unrelated incident later the same day, George police members conducted patrols in Napier Street, Blanco when they came across a man who acted suspiciously. The members approached the man and
upon searching him, found a zip gun and a .22 round of ammunition in his possession. The 33-year-old man was subsequently arrested on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
All those arrested were expected to make their respective appearances in various courts on Monday 6 May.
These arrests and confiscations forms part of ongoing interventions to safeguard communities.
