GRAB A COFFEE

‘At Chocoloza they use Bean There beans, but somehow all their coffee is chocolate-infused. I order the almond latte, which comes with a choc truffle. The ambience is laid-back and super friendly. I’m convinced the staff is high on happy chocolate fumes!’ 010-900-4892

GET SOCIAL

‘CaleXico, formerly the Stanley Beer Yard, is Jozi’s cosiest music venue, with a massive fireplace in winter, outdoor tables in summer, and rock ’n roll vinyl being spun by the best DJs on Friday nights. Every Saturday there are live bands. I don’t drink but I’ve heard the alcoholic ginger beer is awesome.’ 011-482-5791 ‘For those thunderstormy nights, Hotel QSL’s bar, with its massive windows, provides the best lightning watching.’ 011-830-0000

UNIQUE FINDS

‘Pichuluk creates Africa-inspired costume jewellery (011-482-1389); Rowdy Bags makes super leather bags and backpacks (072-8407172) and The Atelier (011-4822137) has some very inspired art prints. Love Jozi (011-482-9148) is the place for interesting curios – there’s nothing quite like coming home with Hillbrow and Brixton Tower side lamps!’

LOCAL CUISINE

‘Salvation Café is always a treat. The heavenly New York cheesecake is a must, and so is the breakfast duo of half eggs Florentine, half sweet French toast.’ 011-482-7795

‘At The Leopard+ deli, the menu is seasonal, fresh and there’s a flavour explosion in every bite. I love the Pata Plate – three salads and chicken.’ 011-482-9356
