Guy Bennett of Grande Provence, Franschhoek
I’m not one to lie on the beach and sun tan. I’ll adventure to all sorts of destinations, letting loose and trying everything.
I’m always on the lookout for new music – in music stores or at gigs. Getting tattooed in different countries is a must, and if there are waves I’ll try get in the water and catch a few.
I always take a day or two ‘off’ during a trip. Downtime while on holiday allows me to process what I’ve experienced.
Buying and cooking local ingredients on holiday means I’m constantly aware that I’m in a different place, and it’s more authentic – even a simple salad or sandwich can be so much fun using local foods.
I visited Paris twice when I was a kid, and was mesmerised by the markets and food culture. I returned in June 2017 and fell in love all over again. I plan to return whenever I get a chance!
The best meal I’ve had on holiday was in Barcelona at Tapeo. Amazing tapas – beef sliders with truffle mayo and foie gras, crispy anchovy with fresh lemon, dark-chocolate mousse with sea salt…
One place in SA everyone should visit is McGregor. It’s a surreal dorpie in the mountains, a different world.
I’ve got more travelling to do before I can choose a favourite place. Next I’ll be hitting up Hong Kong and an island off Vietnam. Guy created this summer’s new hummus-and-wine pairing at Grande Provence. 021-876-8600
