Cape Town’s Newlands has more than just a brewery

GRAB A COFFEE

‘As far as I know, we’re the only cafe in Newlands serving Rosetta Roastery coffee, and I truly believe they roast the best in Cape Town. We select each new batch to suit our ice cream and complement our menu.’

LOCAL CUISINE

‘El Burro never disappoints. Grab a seat by the window or in the courtyard and order the ceviche starter, the build-yourown fish tacos and a horchata (a Mexican rice milk) to drink. The new small-plates menu, exclusive to the Newlands branch, is the perfect way to graze your way through their menu in one meal!’ 37A Dean Street, 021-201-1421 CO-OWNER OF THE CREAMERY ‘We make and sell handmade, natural and seasonal ice creams. Newlands is our flagship cafe – when we opened in 2013, it was half its current size. Dean Street somehow feels quiet and green, while still functioning as the area’s main thoroughfare. We’re also fortunate to be in the Newlands Quarter; it’s great to see how many diverse offerings – such as Rootbar (fresh juices), Patina (steakhouse) and Hello Gorgeous (beauty salon) – have come together in one block. Ice cream is incredibly versatile, and by rotating flavours every month there’s always something to look forward to. When Nicky from Grafted Organics brings strawberries to our door, we know winter is finally over. From November, we start looking out for granadillas and nectarines. The thrill of the short cherry season starting in December, or when the first pears arrive in autumn, just never wears off!’ Newlands Quarter, Dean Street, 021-686-3975

OUT & ABOUT

‘A summer holiday is hardly complete without a day spent at Newlands Cricket Ground, enjoying a test with a beer in one hand and a hot dog in the other.’ 8 Boundary Road, 021-659-4600 ‘Newlands Forest is the ultimate place for shaded walks, beautiful views over the city and cool dog-spotting.’ The parking area is off Union Avenue/M3.

GET SOCIAL

‘Wijnhuis is a wine bar down the road, and has a wonderful view of the mountain and an amazing selection of local wines and beers. My favourite thing to do here is try something new that I wouldn’t normally drink.’ Corner of Kildare and Main streets, 021-671-9705
