‘If you’re looking for local design, the Montebello Centre has it all, from the Mogalakwena Craft Art shop and a wonderful nursery run by a mother and daughter to ceramics and art studios. It’s always a treat to visit jewellery-maker Beloved Beadworks and see what Anna and her team are up to. The Gardener’s Cottage also serves delicious scones, so definitely stay for tea.’ The property dates back to 1764, with the homestead and stables built in the 19th century. Owners included one of the first beer brewers in the Cape, and Cecil Michaelis, the ‘father’ of the SA ceramics industry. Today it has more than 20 studios and workshops, a forge, historic greenhouse and an organic deli. montebello.co.za
