Getaway (South Africa)

THE RIGHT GEAR

-

Perhaps because it’s in the middle of a city, people tend to underestimate the risks of climbing Table Mountain and how important it is to prepare for a hike. I’ve seen people walking up in flipflops without so much as a water bottle. Take heed of these basic rules: Carry two litres of water per person.

There is drinkable water on the mountain but some areas are dry. Also take plenty of high-energy snacks. Wear high-factor sunblock, a sunhat and sunglasses. Long pants (which have the added benefit of shielding your legs from scratchy plants) and a long-sleeved shirt provide extra sun protection.

Carry a wind- and water-resistant

jacket and a headlamp. Even if it’s hot and sunny when you start out, you could end up shivering in mist, wind, rain or darkness when the ‘tablecloth’ descends.

Wear closed shoes with strong, grippy soles. Trail-running shoes are also a good option but if your ankles aren’t strong, stick with hiking boots.

Wear a daypack with waist and chest straps, and pack basic medical supplies.

Use a trekking pole. It’ll take the strain off your knees on the way down. If you plan to walk more adventurous routes, also take a scrambling rope and practise basic rope skills beforehand.
