BEST SURF SPOTS

‘Addington, South Beach, is where it all begins – this sheltered bay is definitely the place to learn how to surf. A few piers up are Bay of Plenty, New Pier and North Beach for more experienced surfers – conditions are more challenging and more crowded. At North Pier, you could be rubbing boards with some of SA’s best surfers. Cave Rock on the Bluff (my home turf) has the biggest and best waves, but because of its reef bottom it can also be dangerous – definitely for very experienced surfers only. Winter is the best time for surfing in Durban, but in late summer (February and March) there are also big swells that come from the summer cyclones up the east coast of Africa.’
