Getaway (South Africa)

Food is such a key part of travel. The best way to understand a culture is through their food. It’s the easiest way to find common ground.

About four years ago I went to the UK to work in Michelin-starred kitchens. First at The Square in Mayfair in London, then at The Harrow in Little Bedwyn with chef Roger Jones. His palate and knowledge of food was astonishing. The best meal I’ve had on holiday was in Kakamas! We stayed with a family on a farm and the oom braaied some of his lamb. It was seasoned with just coriander seeds, salt and pepper, and served with a koringslaai and potbrood made with lamb fat. Watching the sunset from the koppie while eating this meal is a memory I’ll take to my grave. The place in SA everyone should visit is the Knysna area. I might be biased but Franschhoek is also a must-visit for any food and wine lover.

The place I go back to most often is Langebaan – it’s absolutely amazing. The East holds a special place in my heart. My favourite is Thailand – for the warmth of its people, the weather and the food. I’ve been there twice already. My most memorable holiday was my first trip to Thailand with my wife. It was just the two of us and we were based at the Kata Palm Hotel on Phuket – the first place I’d been where it actually looked like it does in the brochure!

We started a family cookbook while on holiday a few years ago, and it now has all of our favourites. Each family member made a contribution, from smoothies to curries. Instead of leaving the kids money when I pass on, they can fight over the book!

Miko’s menu changes seasonally, but the ‘Taste of Miko’ (R550 pp) is a five-course feast of the most-loved dishes. 021-876-2770
