CATHERINE HOFMEYR

Cape Town, page 72 & Velddrif, page 98

Catherine spent most of her childhood holidays on the Cape West Coast, flitting between a shack in what’s now the West Coast National Park, a tent in Tietiesbaai and surf trips to Eland’s Bay. Until recently Velddrif was simply the ‘salt-pans flamingo place’ en route north. She expected to find birds and bokkoms

there but was also delighted by fine cuisine and craft gin.

CAROLINE WEBB

First Look, page 27 & A to Z of Cape Town Food, page 86

For her final trip as a full-time member of the Getaway team, Caroline returned to Vic Falls for a reckoning with the Zambezi River. On her first visit a few years ago, she almost drowned while white-water rafting (and then had to spend an insect-bitten night sleeping rough on the river bank). This time, she got to relax in a luxury tent on an island in the middle of the mighty river, and made her peace with it. She hopes 2020 brings many more full-circle moments.

DARREL BRISTOW-BOVEY

Hermanus, page 92 & Istanbul, page 104 Darrel no longer leaves home to travel – he has no home and travels all the time, moving every month and living in constant motion. In the last 12 months he has lived in Turkey, the UK, Russia, Cyprus, Germany, Portugal, Cape Town and on various Greek islands. He has been living this way for two years, and the longer it goes on, the harder it is to stop.

CHIARA TURRILLI Food, page 36

With her Italian roots and a father who is a restaurateur, for Chiara food is what brings people together around a table to indulge in delicious dishes and meaningful conversation. While travelling in Europe a few years back, she began the journey of becoming a food stylist, baker and chef. For Getaway in 2020, Chiara will be exploring the diverse cuisines of Africa, starting with Cape Malay food.
