Jacques Marais CHASING RAINBOWS (P 80)

A lifelong attendee to his ʻChurch of the Great Outdoorsʼ, nothing makes him happier than reconnecting with nature, preferably with family and dogs in tow. Thirty-odd years as a respected adventure journalist and photographer has seen him explore wild corners of Africa and the world, from dog-sledding in East Greenland and fat-biking the Skeleton Coast, to getting lost (and found) in Mongoliaʼs Gobi Desert. He recently turned 58 but gets all teenage-y when exposed to fresh air and wilderness spaces. Jacques has authored a dozen-plus outdoor guidebooks and is an award-winning Getty photographer. Chris Marais & Julienne du Toit KAROO SPACE (P 66)

Ask these photojournalists where in the world theyʼd ideally like to wake up and their answer is unanimous: a Karoo farm. Almost any Karoo farm. Read their inside track on a Merino ram auction on Ganora Guest Farm near Nieu-Bethesda and youʼll never run out of conversation the next time you meet a Karoo farmer. Spoiler alert: itʼs not just about the sheep. Working under the brand of Karoo Space, the couple has spent the last 15 years gathering stories from every corner of South Africaʼs dry country, from Cradock to the Kalahari borderlands, published in books and magazine articles. karoospace.co.za

Teagan Cunniffe SHOOTING STARS (P 22)

Photojournalist for Getaway for three years, Teagan now travels Southern and East Africa in search of wilderness areas and adventure. At some point she began training her lens into the night sky, armed with a bright spotlight, a thermos of hot coffee and little else. After a bit of fumbling in the dark, quite literally, understanding dawned and dismal star photography sessions finally turned into brilliant ones. She shares her findings after heading deep into the darkest desert.

Nicole Ludolph KALK BAY (P 94)

A writer from Cape Town, and recent intern at Getaway, Nicole divides her time between hiking, mooching on the beach and wine farm explorations. She always has a book somewhere on her person but don't ask her about it unless you have some time to spare – which is mostly why she loved exploring the ʻbookyʼ village of Kalkies.
