The beginning of the end of WWI
The 1916 Battle of the Somme was followed by the German Spring Offensive, an all-out push to win the war. Beginning on 21 March 1918, German artillery fired on British lines for five hours. Various German divisions then attacked, overwhelming the Allies and gaining a great deal of land. But casualties were extremely high and surged over the coming months. German morale crumbled as their attacks were continuously thwarted, and by midJuly they were being pushed back from the land they had gained. The end was finally in sight. Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918.
