What’s in a name?
The names of big bulls, and cows, have historically been linked to the geographical
features of their home ranges (eg Dzombo, after the stream he frequented) or they were named after
remarkable rangers and conservationists (eg Duke,
after early park ranger Thomas Duke) to honour these people who gave the majority of their lives to the Kruger National Park. These days, emerging tuskers are given names based on their
characteristics and location, (eg Kukura, which is Shona for “growing”, in reference to this bull's quick-growing tusks).
