Hasan Yigit arrived in Cape Town four years ago to learn English, but he fell in love with the city and stayed, eventually opening a Turkish grocery store at the edge of the Bo Kaap. ‘There’s such tolerance here,’ he says. ‘Nowhere in Europe can Muslim people express their faith so openly. On the Sea Point Promenade, you can see people jogging on one side and, on the grass, people on their prayer mats, worshipping. I’ve been to 20 countries, and nowhere else can you find this combination of nature, beautiful beaches, good weather… and the freedom to be who you are.’
