The Surfer
BAVIAANS DUST AND SALTWATER
‘For as long as I can remember, I’ve been on a quest to discover those things that fill my heart with joy, love
and peace,’ says Hilana Marais, a born-and-bred Eastern Cape farm girl
who has lived (and taught) at Woodridge College near Gqeberha for nearly five years. Chances are she’s the first surfer to paddle out at her local break most mornings, ready to carve the waves as early amber rays
beam in over the ocean. ‘This adventure has brought me ever closer to nature,’ she says. ‘Thank goodness for salty water and farm dust! Kouga offers both secret and sacred spaces for adventurous spirits of all kinds. Best of all: as a rule it’s never
crowded.’
