THE WINGMAN
Wessel Wessels is a volunteer who owns a helicopter company. He has allowed the Anti-Poaching Unit to use his choppers for the
last three years. ‘When you look in the rhino’s eyes you can see they… they actually want us to do this,’ he says. ‘It’s just
a pity it has taken us so long to get to the root of the
thing, and the root of the thing is… yes, it is the buyer in Vietnam, yes it is the human trafficking that’s using the rhino horn trade to fund it, yes it’s all of that, but it’s our people, it’s our
government, it’s our government officials, it’s our park officials… it’s everything that is so corrupt and that has been
overtaken by greed.’ ‘There comes a point where there must be humanity in you,’ he said. ‘There has to be some humanity in you to say, some feeling to know… “this is wrong,
I shouldn’t do this”.’
