Your guide to gloss
How to rock a shiny finish on lids, cheeks and more this winter
gloss is everywhere – not only on our lips, but on our entire faces. With beauty game changers like Rihanna and Kim Kardashian West offering up their own popular versions (Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb and KKW Beauty Ultralight Beams), shiny-eyed models walking the runways and basically everyone on our feeds sporting dewy complexions, glossy skin feels thoroughly modern. “Shine adds drama without being over-the-top,” says Grace Lee, makeup artist for Maybelline. Makeup pro Munemi Imai adds, “The wet look is effortlessly sexy.”
Here, how to wear this slick trend on your eyes, lips and skin.
Glassy pink lids
Smokey-eye fatigue? Gloss on the lids creates an effect that’s cooler, says Grace. For hot pink shine, Munemi suggests applying an eye primer like Smashbox 24 Hour Photo Finish Shadow Primer (R325), then smoothing on a highly-pigmented pink powder shadow. We love The Body Shop Colour Crush Eyeshadow in Berry Cheeky (R50). Finish with a clear gloss, by tapping it on with your finger. No matter which gloss you choose, be warned: “It’s going to move,” Grace adds. “Apply it a little higher on your eyelid and avoid your lash line to prevent wreaking havoc on your mascara.”
Vinyl cherry lips
“While peachy, nude shine is certifiably fresh, a bright pink gloss is high glamour,” says Grace. For the latex-like lips, fill lips entirely with liner and swipe on a bright lipstick to completely saturate your lips with colour. Follow with a clear, high-impact gloss, like Essence Shine Shine Shine Lipgloss in Behind The Scenes (R44.95). Or try Rimmel Oh My Gloss! Oil Tint in Modern Pink (R89.95). It’s a bit of a high-maintenance look, so prepare for midday touch-ups and avoid kissing too many coffee cups.
Gloss gives off a pretty, dewy texture without being too obvious. To prep skin, stick with moisturiser only or use a liquid foundation, as mixing with a powder can get clumpy. TRY Elizabeth Arden Flawless Finish Perfectly Satin 24HR Makeup (R475). Warm up the gloss on the back of your hand, and gently tap it high up along your cheekbones and under your brows. TRY Gosh Lip Oil in Clear (R155). To keep from looking straight up sweaty, “Avoid gloss on your T-zone,” Grace advises.
