Hereditary

When Annie Graham’s (Toni Collette) mother dies, her death begins to unravel something far more sinister than just old wounds: her carefully-constructed miniature model dioramas are just slightly ‘off’, and her daughter, Charlie (Milly Shapiro), might be evoking an ancient family curse. It’s a truly creepy horror-thriller from first-time writer and director Ari Aster. Imbued with a sense of dread right from the get-go, it’s 127 minutes of fear as an unspeakable family tragedy moves into the supernatural. ✪✪✪✪✪

Ocean’s 8

This spin-off of the Steven Soderberghdirected Ocean’s films stars Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, the head of an all-female heist crew. The cast (Rihanna, Cate Blanchett, Awkwafina, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson and Helena Bonham Carter) is as dazzling as the $150 million necklace they plan to steal from celeb Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway) at the glittering Met Gala. ✪✪✪✪

On Chesil Beach

Based on the novel by Ian Mcewan (bestselling writer of Atonement), the film follows Edward (Billy Howle) and Florence (Saoirse Ronan), virgins and newlyweds from different societal classes trying to navigate the pitfalls and pressures of the sexual revolution in 1962 England. It’s a superb, genteel film, yet one with a disturbing grip. ✪✪✪✪

Tag

Proving boys never grow up, is this comedy about childhood friends (Ed Helms, Jon Hamm, Hannibal Buress and Jake Johnson) who have been playing Tag since school. This year, the game coincides with the wedding of Jerry (Jeremy Renner), the only player to never be ‘it’ – and they are determined to bring him down. Sounds ludicrous, but it works. ✪✪✪
