10 Ways to slay with wigs
01 Do your research
Always ask around about any hair supplier before buying hair; purchasing hair based off what you see on social media can be very misleading. You’ll end up ordering hair that looks a certain way and receive something that’s completely different or even hair that goes bad after one wash, so it’s best to hear other experiences of the hair supplier you’re interested in purchasing from, because hair is an investment.
02 Treat it like your crown
Wigs don’t benefit from the naturally occurring oils on the scalp, so you need to take extra care of it to extend its lifespan. I love to deep condition and mask my wigs. It leaves the hair feeling so silky and smooth, while detangling at the same time.
03 Store your wigs well
I store my wigs in re-sealable bags at the back of my cupboard. Use a bag per wig – you don’t want to mix a clean wig with one you’ve worn daily for two weeks.
04 Make it stay
Secure your wig by adding an elastic band or adjustable strap, you don’t want it falling off or moving back in front of people. An elastic band will also help keep your frontal flat, so that you don’t have to glue down your lace every single day.
05 Don’t neglect your natural hair
Remember that you have a beautiful crown that you always need to take care of underneath your wigs, so keep a protective style and do regular treatments on your natural hair, too. Keep it hydrated and moisturised.
06 Leave curls alone
Let your curly hair air dry, there is no need to use heat on curly wigs at all. If you want the curls to last, put an oil on them instead and let them air dry.
07 Wash new wigs
For hygiene reasons, never wear a wig fresh out of the packaging. Wash it first – this will also be a test to its true quality.
08 Wear a backup wig to the gym
Don’t wear your favourite wig to the gym. If you’re not comfortable with going to the gym or out to a public area with cornrows, try to use one of your old wigs instead.
09 Go to a pro
Make your wig look as natural as possible. The easiest way is to bleach and pluck your knots, if you can’t do this yourself, take it to a hairstylist who can or else you’ll damage your closure. Trust me, I’ve been there, done that!
10 Don’t rent hair
I recently saw a trend of people hiring wigs on Twitter, and it was so disturbing. If you can’t afford a wig at the moment, save up and invest in one when your finances allow it. Renting a wig will eventually amount to buying one. Plus, there is nothing hygienic about sharing hair. It’s a big no!
