10 short s ecrets

- Words by TUMI VOSTER

01 Find your style

When I was a child, my gran used to plait my hair into pigtails, but as I grew up, I experimented more with weaves, colouring them or adding blonde braids. It was exciting to be able to change up my style while still having healthy hair underneath.

02 Be ready

The rst time I cut my hair short, the stylist misinterpreted the picture and it didn’t come out the way I wanted. It was too short (probably the same length I have now) but I wasn’t ready for it at that time. Start with a bob cut, and progressively go shorter.

03 Take inspo from everywhere

I scour social media and draw inspiration from people around me to create my own unique style.

04 Consider fashion

Complement your style. If it’s edgy, be creative and push boundaries. Classic? Go more traditional.

05 Your stylist is key

Find a person you can trust to tell you whether your expectations are realistic. My stylist really understands my hair and is honest with me about it. He also considers my fashion style to work out my hairstyle.

06 Take care of your scalp

I used to get dandruff at the front of my scalp. I got a professional product infused with peppermint and aloe, and it sorted the problem.

07 Relax with a pro

A good stylist understands your hair’s history and suggests good products.

08 Take a break

Maintain a healthy hairline by taking breaks between protective styles.

09 Embrace your imperfections

Celebrate your version of beautiful. Remember that no one is perfect, so accept and nd your own beauty.

10 Your hair counts

This is the best advice I received: even if you wear wigs, don’t neglect your natural hair underneath. (1) Design Essentials Peppermint & Aloe Soothing Scalp Tonic R310 (2) T444Z Hair Products Hair Food
