How to unf*ck yourself and succeed

How to move past your self-imposed limitations.

- Words by THOBEKA PHANYEKO

“Having a positive attitude will help you build resilience in the face of adversity”

It’s possible that the obstacle that’s standing in the way of your success is you, but that doesn’t mean you should curl up in a ball and call it quits. As a life coach and NLP practitioner, I’ve used some of the principles in Unf*ck Yourself, a selfhelp book by personal development expert and best-selling author Gary John Bishop, which are at the heart of NLP, to compile a six-step guide to help you get unstuck and get the life you want.

1

LET GO OF

ALL YOUR LIMITING BELIEFS

If you find yourself in trouble, it’s because a series of decisions led you here, and at the core of it lies your belief system. Your beliefs will either be the reason you fail or succeed, so it’s important to ask yourself hard questions as a way of checking yourself. Do you believe in your idea of success or are you setting yourself up to fail based on a belief system that no longer serves you?

2

GET OUT OF YOUR HEAD

You face a hard decision and the negative voices in your head tell you you’re not cut out for the challenge. Operating from a place of fear might be your default setting, but operating from a place of possibility allows you to get out of your head and live. So ask yourself: what would I do if I wasn’t scared? And do it! Sometimes the best way to get over a fear is to face it head on. Ever heard the saying, “Feel the fear and do it anyway?”

3

DISRUPT YOURSELF

It’s easy to get caught up in a cycle of toxic habits, especially when you’re going on autopilot. The most common excuse is, “It’s just the way I am.” The awesome thing about being human is that we’re adaptable creatures, so a change is possible. The next time you catch yourself doing the same thing but expecting di‡erent results, stop yourself in your tracks and change the narrative.

4

TAKE BACK YOUR POWER

The sooner you realise you’re the only person responsible for your own happiness, the better it will be. Stop waiting to be rescued and get back into the driver’s seat. Work on your confidence and build yourself up so you can believe in the beauty of your dreams. Even if you don’t think your dreams are valid at the moment, act like they are. If you act like a boss long enough, you’ll start to feel like one.

5

BE MORE INTENTIONAL

Be deliberate about how you spend your time. Where are you investing your energy? If you spend a lot of time on social media, then make sure what you’re consuming adds value to your life. Follow inspirational people and download audio books that will help you feel more empowered and less anxious.

6

YOU’VE GOT THIS

When you’re on your A-game and are serious about getting unstuck, you’re destined to win because, ultimately, having a positive attitude will help you build resilience in the face of adversity. Get out of your own way, put your best foot forward and get the bag!
