Twinkle, twinkle

- Words by Wendy Robinson

a cross between the Toyota Etios and the Suzuki Baleno, has the core strengths of the Etios – decent performance, fuel efficiency, affordability – amplified by a modern exterior, a spacious interior and enhanced specifications.

It sure ticks all the boxes when it comes to design appeal. Exterior crease lines create a sense of motion, and its presence is strong yet classy.

On the inside, its spacious and ergonomic, and its display is easy to read. It has a leather steering wheel with cruise control, park distance control (PDC), a reverse camera and climate control.

Your daily commute

The Starlet has a 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine, which makes light work of driving. It doesn’t make much noise when you’re commuting to work either.

Changing gear is seamless and makes driving even more pleasurable.

Another benefit is its low fuel consumption – the brands claim 37 litres of fuel can last up to 700km.

Despite being the range’s entry level model, the Xi features electric power steering and windows, airconditioning and remote central locking. The Xs has alloy wheels, and the flagship Xr has front fog lamps, LED and Projector headlamps with daytime running lights (DRL), side-mirror mounted indicators and a roof spoiler.

Entertainment

Besides USB, MP3/AUX and Bluetooth compatability in all Starlet models, both the Xi and Xs include an audio system with a Cd/bluetooth/ USB/AUX function, while the Xr comes with a feature-rich touchscreen audio system, and Android Auto and Apple Carplay.

All Starlet models have a Toyota Connect telematics system, which includes an in-car Wi-fi hotspot and a complimentary 15GB data. Once linked to your profile, you can manage your vehicle via the Mytoyota app.
