From improved Flexibility and

mental wellbeing to a more positive outlook on life, Yoga’s more than just another fitness fad. The ancient science dates back more than 5 000 years.

I have practised and taught yoga since discovering the profound benefits it had on my mind and body a few years ago. I’d recommend it for anyone who wants to feel good and have fun with movement. The beauty of yoga is that anyone can do it. Attending classes in a yoga studio is great, but a home-based practice works just as well. During the Covid-19 pandemic, my practice helped me to navigate anxiety and stress amid the chaos. Every morning, I’d run through my physical yoga routine, then, using breathing techniques, still my mind to focus on the things I was grateful for. That simple exercise allowed me to disconnect from the world and stop feeling overwhelmed. Most people are hesitant about trying yoga because they think you need to be flexible. Surprisingly, that’s the reason you should try it. If you want to start a home-based practice, it’s crucial to work with a yoga teacher (even virtually) who understands your fitness level and the amount of time you have to practice. That’ll help your teacher to tailor a programme to your needs. A check-in session, every now and then, is all you need thereafter. This year’s been uncertain, meaning you may be feeling stuck in a negative mindset, worrying next year will be just as bad. My advice for 2021 is to commit to a regular, home-based yoga routine that includes meditation. Use physical exercise to feel good about your body and meditation to connect to the best version of yourself in all aspects of your life. With as much clarity as you can muster, allow your mind to experience the best version of yourself. That person already exists; this exercise helps you to focus on your positive goals for 2021.

“Use meditation to connect to the best version of yourself ”
