Beads of empowerment

Isu (“method” in Zulu) is exactly what this brand focuses on.

-

WITH A MISSION TO empower women, Isu does more than many of today’s accessory brands. It nurtures existing and historical skills by encouraging the continuation of traditional beading and the teaching of these skills to others. Isu holds the traditional art form sacred, and celebrates it thoughtfully and collaboratively.

When it comes to developing contemporary and appealing concepts, Isu encourages it’s local team to take creative risks, collaborate and innovate. The conscious accessories brand is inspired by the traditional craftwork and ancient art form of African beading, introduces Zulu craftsmanship to a global audience.

Each piece is handcrafted by a team of women from communities in Kwazulunatal. Collections comprise a combination of tribal weaves, contemporary elements and vibrant colourways. Each of these tells its own story of our land through design and colour

Wearing a piece from Isu means supporting the brand as a social enterprise project. Its founders don’t earn a salary. Instead, they put every penny they make back into the community to grow the team and provide more work for women beaders. Isu produces in small quantities as each piece is handmade and unique, making each item one-of-a-kind. To minimise waste, the brand gifts unsold items to the community or reuses the beads for future collections.

You can honestly feel good when you shop for and adorn yourself with any of Isu’s beautifully made pieces.
