JUST ASKING...

Dr Dudu Kgoebane-masoeu

- Words by Jesé Lillienfeldt-hartman

Glamour: Self-care is crucial. What’s the one thing you’ll never compromise? Dr Dudu Kgoebanemasoeu: Rest, rest and more rest. My body and mind function so much better when I’m well-rested, so hitting the reset button is a priority.

G: A beauty habit you picked up during the lockdown?

DK-M: I rekindled my love for at-home hair treatments and wash days. I loved doing my hair when I was growing up, but as I became older and my schedule busier, a weekly or bi-weekly visit to a hairdresser’s was more convenient. Of course, that wasn’t an option during the lockdown.

G: A beauty habit you left behind in your teens? DK-M: Being too lazy to do my nighttime skincare routine after a night out, sleeping with makeup on – I still cringe at the thought – and popping my breakouts.

G: Which beauty items are on your shopping list?

DK-M: Makeup: HUDA Beauty Glowish Multidew Skin Tint (R620), Dior Lip Glow Oil (R780) and

HUDA Beauty Lip Contour in Terracotta (R320).

Skincare: Chanel Hydra Beauty Hydration Protection Radiance Energising Mist (R1 150), Eve Lom Intense Hydration Serum (R2 385) and SMOOCH Honeymoon Glow Serum (R499).

G: The beauty advice everyone should follow?

DK-M: Apply sunscreen to your face, neck and décolletage every day, come rain or shine, and re-apply it every two to three hours throughout the day, especially when exposed to direct sunlight.

Ditch makeup wipes and get into the habit of double-cleansing (using a balm or oil cleanser to melt away makeup, followed by an everyday cleanser). Balm or oil cleansers remove makeup more effectively than makeup wipes, plus they’re gentle on your skin.

G: The beauty and skincare technique you’re bomb at, and one you still need help with?

DK-M: I change my skincare routine seasonally. I used to have the same skincare routine all year, which meant my skin, prone to dryness, suffered during cold, dry months.

Now, I tweak my skincare routine every season.

I still need help with applying strip lashes, the one beauty technique I always fail dismally at.

G: Which beauty products are currently in your bathroom?

DK-M: IS Clinical Cleansing Complex (R893), Neostrata Enlighten Dual Acid

Brightening Peel (R1 200), Skin Functional Hydration Juice Serum (R230), Neutrogena Bright Boost Gel Cream (R199.95), Dermopal Moisturising Sunscreen

SPF 30 (R99.95), Black Girl Moisturising Sunscreen SPF 30 (R395) and Skin Republic Sheet Masks (from R55).

G: What’s your signature scent?

DK-M: Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum (R6 515) and Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka Intense Cologne (R2 800).

G: What’s the best advice you’ve received to date, and who was it from?

DK-M: When I was growing up, my mom would emphasise the importance of wearing sunscreen and staying hydrated. I couldn’t understand what the fuss was about, but now that I’m older, I swear by it. I get it now. Thanks, mom!

G: Your off-duty makeup and skincare routine? DK-M:

I enjoy rocking a bare, glowing, dewy face. I start with a gel cleanser as it’s gentle and doesn’t leave my skin feeling stripped. I usually don’t use toner as I’m still hunting for a hydrating one to complement my skin.

Next is a hydrating serum or sheet mask, which replenishes my skin, followed by an anti-oxidant serum – I love Endocare Radiance C

Ferulic Serum (R1 088), which gives my skin an effortless glow. I use a moisturiser containing ingredients panthenol and ceramides, TIA’M Panthenol Moist Cream (R355) being one of my favourite K-beauty moisturisers. The last and most crucial step is sunscreen application. To amplify a glowing, dewy look, I reach for La Roche-posay Anthelios XL Invisible Mist Sunscreen SPF50 (R290). I complete my look by applying a clear lip gloss , and I usually have lash extensions done.

G: Your favourite pick-meup product?

DK-M: A hydrating sheet mask, juicy lip gloss, a new fragrance and a scented candle. Can I pick more than one?

G: What advice would you give to your 18-year-old self ?

DK-M: Be kind to your body, gentle with your mind and patient with your heart. Stay true to yourself, love yourself, live in the moment, appreciate how far you’ve come, and look forward to the journey ahead. You’re doing amazingly, Gorgie!

G: The treatment every woman should try?

DK-M: An oxygen facial gives you hydrated and glowing skin in less than 30 minutes. It’s a go-to facial for summer.

G: What’s your beauty mantra? DK-M: You cannot pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first.

G: What inspires you to be successful? DK-M: Knowing that I get to wake up every day and do what I love and that I have a solid support system, from my amazing family to my incredible girlfriends, and my wonderful online community, my Gorgies!
