KATIMA MULILO TO KABULA LODGE

-

Katima Mulilo in Namibia is the best place to kick off the Zambezi/Kafue route. Do all your grocery shopping in Katima because there aren’t many big shops further north.

The Wenela-Sesheke border post between Katima and Sesheke is usually a smooth crossing, but it can still take some time so give yourself at least an hour. The modern office layout on the Zambian side will make your life easier.

Keep an eye on your GPS once you’re over the border – the roads are confusing. If you want to visit the town of Sesheke (maybe to draw some kwacha), you have to cross the Zambezi River.

Follow the M10 tar road north – it’s on the western side of the river. When I first drove the M10 in 2004, it was still a gravel road. Now the tar goes all the way to Mongu in the north, which makes this route accessible to 4x2 drivers. It’s nice and quiet with few trucks.

I stayed at Kabula Lodge – a big campsite with lots of grass and shade – but there are other places to stay further north. Tigerfishing is popular in the area.
