Time to eat

The kitchen is behind two large hatches that flip open. One hatch folds downwards and creates a work surface. The top hatch flips upwards and creates a canopy above the work surface. A support strut in the far right corner attaches to the body and helps to keep the hatch open. The kitchen light is in the middle of the top door. It’s an LED light (with its own switch) that shines on top of the work surface. The surface measures 136 x 50 cm and just like the bed an adjustable tent pole props it up in each corner. On the right a two-burner gas stove slides out of the body. It’s not connected to the gas bottle and you have to bring one of the bottles on the A-frame nearer. The door of the caravan opens up against the gas stove and unwittingly creates shelter from the wind. Besides the stove that takes up about a third of the work surface, it’s also a bit of a hassle to disconnect the gas stove every time you want to close the kitchen doors. Behind the stove there’s space where you can place spice bottles on their sides, and the shelves above this are perfect for fruit, rusks, the sugar jar and bags of sweets. You can put your wine bottles in the top shelf where it fits into hollowed-out foam rubber. To the left of the gas stove is a tap with a spout that can swing over the work surface – here you can fill up a separate basin. For the bigger grocery items there’s space in the three larger shelves to the left behind the surface. The crockery drawer is in the middle of this.

You can put your leftovers on the top shelf because at the back is a canvas panel that you can unzip from inside if you’re looking for a midnight snack. Underneath the cupboard next to the tap is a multi-socket for three plugs. The SnoMaster fridge/freezer pulls out of the body to the left of the work surface. The freezer’s doors open to the left – out of the way if you want to take something out. But the freezer’s digital display is obscured, so you can’t read the temperature. Just like the awning over the bed, the kitchen has a similar roof that pitches just as easily.
